Romney and Obama as average Joes: many differences, yet a ...

Politics are a never ending battle between who?s right and who thinks they are right, though all poking and prodding aside, Mitt Romney, or actually Willard as his first name actually is ? seems to be a decent guy. Back in the day and up to this point in time, he has been a family man. He and his wife Ann raised 5 boys Tagg, Matt, Josh, Ben and Craig without any extra help as Mrs. Romney claims, and all have become successful in their endeavors. Most have chosen the same path as their father, being a father themselves, all of them married. Ben is the only Romney who?s childless, yet has a yorkie-poodle mix which Mitt calls his grand-dog. The Romney?s are very family oriented and have bundles of grandchildren, 18 to be exact.

?In this life, the commitments that come closest to forever are those of family,? Mitt Romney said coherently as he addressed the Liberty University Class of 2012.

Family values like having dinner with his kids and grandchildren are definitely approved of, by voters. Being able to stick to rules and keep your word are grand qualities any president in the running should have, and Mitt Romney has proven that through his religion?s strict guidelines of no booze, no coffee, and no smoking.

Perhaps the reasons listed above could be why some Americans gawk over his stature, his pristine values and charismatic speeches. In fact, millennials better known as the youth vote is where one survey discovered intriguing findings. If a millennial was taken to a voting booth in their childhood, they were significantly more likely to vote when they became of age, according to the Public Religion Research Institute. This sort of parental example coincides with the fact that family does hold its weight in elections as a whole.

Shifting over to the baby boomers, where some of them are now entering into retirement age, a second survey points out their attitudes on life including family values. The Pew Research Center found baby boomers to be less accepting of same sex couples raising children and couples cohabiting without tying the knot. Keep in mind, as Mitt has stated before, he is against gay marriage, not to mention abortion.

Yet it is certain to note that he is not the only candidate playing the family card here, Barack Obama is doing so too. Why, back in 2008 when he was elected into office, he promised his 2 daughters, Sasha and Malia that they would get a puppy if they moved into the White House. He kept that pact with them and now the Portuguese water dog, Bo is already 4. But, his values look slightly different from Romney?s.

As Romney conceals his first name from the public eye, Obama does the same with his middle name Hussein?which is not even in the top 1000 male names for the last 12 years, according to the Social Security Administration in the US, neither is Willard though.

?When we?re in town here in Washington, in the evenings, six thirty we want to be at the dinner table with the kids and I want to be helping with their homework,? said Barack Obama in an interview with CNN?s Jessica Yellin.

Although Obama?s family get-togethers seem transparent, we hardly ever see Obama with his aunt or uncle. Uncle Onyango has been accused of evading a deportation order and Aunt Zeituni had donated money to his previous campaign, a prohibited act since she is an illegal immigrant.

We see his extended family, but sadly in a dim light in the news. Even Sasha and Malia are pushed away from the bright lights and media spots but for good reasons. Mrs. Obama wants them to have a normal childhood. When faith comes into account, the Obama clan is said to rarely attend church on Sunday, a very family oriented activity and he is still perceived by some Americans as a Muslim. Romney on the other hand is said to go to church almost every Sunday, a stark contrast from how the Obama family deals with religious gatherings.

Harvard made and politically driven, these inquisitive men have much to offer the public. They have tax proposals, an initiative to jump-start jobs, and an excitable talent of muddling their opponent?s words. Take away the political fights though, and we can see 2 dedicated families who have core values that encompass love, compassion, and protection over their offspring. Their religious practices and honorary awards may differ, but in the end they are just like the rest of us. All they crave is acceptance ? not just by voters, but especially by their one and only family.
