Suspected looter arrested in post-Sandy rubble

By David Chang, NBC10.com

A man found in the rubble of a storm-lashed building in Philadelphia was a suspected looter looking for items to sell, police told NBC10.

While firefighters were on the scene of three-story building collapse they found a man who was then arrested for disorderly conduct.

Latest updates on Sandy from NBC News

The incident happened in Cumberland Street in North Philadelphia. Investigators say an abandoned building collapsed. No one was hurt.

NBC10 cameras rolled as firemen stood at the scene. As they were talking among themselves, a sound was heard from beneath the rubble. When they went to investigate, they found a man underneath. The firemen pulled the man out and took him to police.

More stories from NBC10.com

Police told NBC10 reporter John Clark that they believed the man was underneath the wreckage looting and looking for items to sell, such as copper. The man was arrested and will be charged with disorderly conduct, according to police.

The cause of the collapse is being investigated.

Sugary drinks linked to higher stroke risk

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Women who imbibe sugary soft drinks almost every day are 83 percent more likely to have a certain type of stroke than women who rarely drink sodas and other sweetened beverages, according to a new study from Japan.

Although the findings don't prove that sweet drinks are to blame for the higher stroke risk, other studies have shown links between high sugar intake and clogged arteries, said Dr. Adam Bernstein, a researcher at the Cleveland Clinic, who was not involved in the study.

And "as the authors here saw, most of the (increased) risk was with ischemic stroke, the kind of stroke with plaque buildup" in the arteries, Bernstein said.

The results agree with a host of other studies tying sugary drinks to all sorts of untoward health effects, including heart attacks, obesity and diabetes.

Some governments have responded by trying to discourage people from choosing sweetened drinks, such as with tax proposals and New York's ban on super-sized sodas. Schools also have cut back on making sugary drinks available to students.

Given the increased availability of soft drinks in Japan over the past several decades, researchers, led by Dr. Hiroyasu Iso at Osaka University, wanted to see if soda drinkers there had also higher risks of heart disease and stroke.

Nearly 40,000 people answered a dietary, health and lifestyle questionnaire, first in 1990 and again in 1995 and 2000.

They split the people into four groups: those who rarely drank soft drinks, those who had one to two cups a week, those who had three to four cups a week, and those who had a soft drink nearly every day.

Soft drinks were considered sugar-sweetened sodas and juices, and not diet sodas or 100 percent fruit juices.

Frequently drinking diet soda has also been linked to a greater likelihood of suffering from a stroke, but the study did not take sugar-free sodas into account (see Reuters Health report of February 17, 2012).

The American Beverage Association, which represents soda and other soft drink makers, said the new research did not add much new information.

"This study does nothing to educate people about the real causes of heart disease or heart health issues," the association said in a statement. "It only shows what we already know to be among the risk factors for heart disease: ethnicity and age. There is nothing unique about soft drinks when it comes to heart disease, stroke or any other adverse health outcomes."

NO LINK FOR MEN

The research group tracked how many people developed heart disease or had a stroke between the beginning of the study period until 2008.

Women were more likely to suffer from a stroke if they had a soft drink just about every day compared to women who never drank them.

For instance, out of 11,800 women who rarely had a soft drink, 205 - or 1.7 percent - went on to have an ischemic stroke.

Of the 921 women in the drink-a-day category, 28 - or three percent - had such a stroke.

The research team saw no link in men between soft drink consumption and stroke risk.

It's not clear why, but it's possible that men with early signs of cardiovascular disease might have cut down on their soda drinking.

"So when they're diagnosed with stroke down the road, those with early disease were drinking less," Bernstein suggested.

The authors write in their report in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition that the increased risk among frequent female soda drinkers might be explained by soft drinks' effects on metabolism.

High soft drink intake is tied to an increase in weight gain, blood sugar and fats, and hypertension, which in turn is linked to an increased risk of ischemic stroke, they explain.

"It makes sense, if (sugar sweetened beverages) increase the risk for obesity, diabetes, insulin resistance, inflammation, then it should, in fact, raise the risk for cardiovascular disease, and that's what we're seeing," said Bernstein.

The study did not find that soft drinkers had an increased risk of heart disease caused by clogged arteries, perhaps because the underlying metabolic problems tied to soft drinks are more of a risk factor for stroke than for heart disease in this group of people, the authors write.

Bernstein said there's enough evidence against sugary drinks to justify efforts to curb their popularity and point people to healthier choices, such as coffee, tea and water.

"No single strategy is going to solve the problem, and I think a multipronged approach is going to work," he said.

Decline in incidence of heart attacks appears associated with smoke-free workplace laws

Decline in incidence of heart attacks appears associated with smoke-free workplace laws

Tuesday, October 30, 2012

A decline in the incidence of myocardial infarction (MI, heart attack) in one Minnesota county appears to be associated with the implementation of smoke-free workplace laws, according to a report published Online First by Archives of Internal Medicine, a JAMA Network publication.

Exposure to secondhand smoke (SHS) is associated with coronary heart disease (CHD) in nonsmokers, and research suggests that the cardiovascular effects of SHS are nearly as large as those with active smoking, according to the study background. Elimination of smoking in public places, such as by smoke-free laws and policies, has the potential for reducing smoking and perhaps cardiovascular events.

Richard D. Hurt, M.D., and colleagues at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn., evaluated the incidence of MI and sudden cardiac death (SCD) in Olmsted County, Minn., during the 18-month period before and after implementation of smoke-free ordinances. In 2002, a smoke-free restaurant ordinance was implemented and, in 2007, all workplaces, including bars, became smoke free.

"We report a substantial decline in the incidence of MI from 18 months before the smoke-free restaurant law was implemented to 18 months after the comprehensive smoke-free workplace law was implemented five years later," the authors comment.

When comparing the 18 months before implementation of the smoke-free restaurant ordinance with the 18 months after implementation of the smoke-free workplace law, the incidence of MI declined by 33 percent from about 150.8 to 100.7 per 100,000 population, and the incidence of SCD declined by 17 percent from 109.1 to 92 per 100,000 population.

"All people should avoid SHS exposure as much as possible, and those with CHD should have no exposure to SHS," the authors conclude.

Commentary: Extending the Health Benefits of Clean Indoor Air Policies

In an invited commentary, Sara Kalkhoran, M.D., and Pamela M. Ling, M.D., M.P.H., of the University of California, San Francisco, write: "The results of the study by Hurt et al highlight some of the potential benefits of 100 percent smoke-free policies in workplaces, restaurants and bars: significantly decreased incidence of myocardial infarction and a trend toward decreased sudden cardiac death."

"Moving forward, we should prioritize the enforcement of smoke-free policies, eliminating loopholes in existing policies as well as encouraging expansion of smoke-free policies to include multiunit housing, motor vehicles, casinos and outdoor locations," they continue.

"Exposure to SHS should not be a condition of employment, and all workers, including those of lower income and those in the service and hospitality industries, should have equal protection from SHS exposure," they conclude.

Long-oppressed Kurds get taste of freedom

Danny Gold

A new member of the Kurds' Popular Protection Units (YPG) stands in front of a crowd waving Kurdish flags in Qamishli, Syria. The Kurds are the largest ethnic group in the world without a homeland, totaling more than 30 million people.

By Danny Gold

DERIK, Syria -- From the roof of the new home he is building on the outskirts of the Kurdish controlled city of Derik in northeast Syria, Bashir Said Mohammad can count a dozen or so other structures in different stages of completion. "All this building has happened after the revolution," he says. "Before we were not able to build. You would go to the regime and they would say no, because we are in the Kurdish areas."

In the Kurdish areas of Syria, known as Rojava, people have wasted little time seizing on the opportunities a tentative retreat by President Bashar Assad's government forces three months ago has afforded them. But while a burgeoning civil society independent of Assad's regime continues to grow, the Kurds are desperately trying to avoid the devastating violence that has battered cities like Aleppo and Homs.

The Kurds are the largest ethnic group in the world without a homeland, totaling more than 30 million people. Spread out between parts of Iraq, Syria, Iran and Turkey, they have been subjected to decades of oppression aimed at erasing their cultural identity in all four regions. Kurds make up around 10 percent of the population in Syria, totaling about 2 million, but have been treated as second-class citizens for generations.

In July, Assad forces made a hasty retreat from a number of Kurdish cities and towns in northeastern Syria. Despite a few skirmishes, the situation has remained relatively peaceful.

Though prices have risen, Derik's cafes are still full and people linger in the streets with little fear. Kurdish flags now fly from shops and houses, Kurdish police forces known as Asayish patrol the streets and community organizations known as People's Houses, "mala gels" in Kurdish, have been set up to solve disputes and act as de facto government institutions.

The Kurdish language, which as little as two years ago was forbidden, is now taught in state schools. Delkesh Resol, a 22-year-old former door-to-door salesman, was preparing one recent Sunday morning to teach a Kurdish language lesson to high school students despite a warning from the regime that language classes were to have stopped the previous Thursday.

'Studying in secret'
His act of defiance, which prior to the revolution would have led to a prison sentence and possible torture, did not concern him. "I'm not worried, there is no fear when you're doing something from your heart," Resol said. "Before this we knew there would come a day when we could do this (teach Kurdish in the schools), so we were studying in secret. If we need to teach Kurdish in the streets, we will."

Danny Gold

High school students in a classroom in Derik, Syria, listen to a teacher giving Kurdish lessons. Teaching the Kurdish language was previously forbidden.

The mala gel in Derik is made up of 40 members, and resolves disputes on everything from agriculture to the distribution of donations received from Kurds in Iraq. There is even a member who specializes in divorces. Additional "houses," such as the Women's House and the Youth House, handle more specialized disputes.

Despite Resol's confidence, it is still necessary to be wary of Assad Mukhabarat, or secret police, in Derik. Though the city is described as liberated, plainclothes intelligence officers still lurk the streets. Just exactly who is in power, and how much power they have, is vague.

The lack of heavy conflict and continued presence of Assad men in some of the cities have led to accusations that the Kurdish leadership arranged a secret deal with the regime, where they were allowed to take over certain areas in exchange for not forcing a third front. Others have argued that the Kurds are simply acting practically.

"The regime has not subjected the Kurdish regions to the same level of violence that it has directed against other parts of Syria,"?said Thomas McGee, a researcher on Syrian Kurds at Britain's University of Exeter, who spent two years living in the region and was there for the first eight months of the revolution.?"Kurds have not gone out of their way to bring this upon themselves, learning from the regime's brutal reaction to the 2004 Kurdish uprising." ?In 2004, Kurdish protests that began at a soccer game led to an assault by regime forces that ended with over 30 Kurdish citizens killed.

"The fact that neither the regime nor Kurds en masse have actively declared war on the other need not mean that there is collusion. Each side has their interests and is pursuing this," McGee added. "Kurds, for their part seek stability and wish to avoid escalation."

NBC News

People resisting the army of President Bashar al-Assad in northern Syria cope with loss and prepare for fighting.

Both sides in the Kurdish areas walk a tenuous line, in some areas existing side-by-side while trying to avoid direct conflict that seems inevitable. Regime buildings are still occupied by officials, but the people inside are said to be powerless. In Derik -- which is 90 percent Kurdish -- the mala gel is housed in a building formerly used by a youth committee of Assad's ruling Baath party. It is now adorned with photos of Syrian Kurdish martyrs and Abdullah Ocalan, the leader of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) who is jailed in Turkey. According to the State Department, "PKK terrorist activity has been responsible for the deaths of more than 30,000 Turkish citizens."

It is also next door to a local headquarters for the Baath party, where spray-painted photos of Assad family members dot the perimeter walls. In other parts of the city, these images have been defaced, as have representations of the Syrian flag.

The small city of Girke Lege, another liberated Kurdish area, lies adjacent to the oil city of Rmeilan, which is heavily fortified with Assad troops. A large Kurdish flag welcomes visitors to the city, but after a ten-minute drive down the road, an Assad flag waves above a fortress-like encampment.

'It feels like a new place'
Kana Berakat, 43, a member of the People's House in Girke Lege, recalls the two times he was imprisoned for Kurdish rights activism. At Aleppo University in 1990, he tried to organize a Newroz celebration and spent 70 days in jail. In 2009, he spent a week in jail after attending a Kurdish rights demonstration. That time, Berakat was arrested because he did not have identification papers. Berakat is one of hundreds of thousands of Kurds in Syria who had their citizenship removed in 1962 and are currently stateless.

"It feels like a new place. Before when I went shopping to get tomatoes, I was very afraid," he said. "I thought the regime would take me. Now I walk around not worried, like I am a free man, but I am worried for the future."

One street in Aleppo: Life goes on as death lurks around every corner

Berakat, though enjoying his newfound freedom, is concerned that as the regime continues to falter, it may one day grow desperate and unleash the troops next door. By then, though, he hopes the Kurdish militia will be strong enough to defend the Kurdish people.

Danny Gold

Bashir Said Mohammad surveys construction on a new home he began building in Derik, Syria, after the revolution started. He had been previously been denied permission because he is a Kurd.

The Kurds' Popular Protection Units (YPG)?patrol the borders and act as a deterrent to both Assad forces and the rebel Free Syrian Army. Established by the Democratic Union Party (PYD), the most powerful Syrian Kurdish political group, the YPG is now distancing itself and trying to be seen as the universal defenders of the Syrian Kurds instead of the party's military wing.

Videos of YPG forces training have shown a noticeable lack of heavily artillery, but the troop numbers are said to be growing every day. The formation of a fourth brigade was just announced.

More Syria coverage from NBC News

The YPG has not hesitated to attack the regime if provoked, and has sought to prevent both the FSA and the regime from entering Kurdish neighborhoods in more contested areas like Kobane and Efrin. After a Kurdish neighborhood in Aleppo was bombed in late July resulting in the death of 21 civilians, YPG forces killed three regime soldiers and captured a number of others.

Machine guns operated by motorcycle brakes? Get a glimpse at the rebels fighting against Assad's forces in Syria's mountainous Jabal al-Zawiya area.

Last week, Assad's forces bombed a Kurdish area in Aleppo. The FSA and the YPG also clashed, reportedly leaving about 20 fighters dead.

At a recent demonstration in the city of Qamishli, 50 or so new recruits lined up for military exercises. They stood silently, faces covered in scarves as to obscure their identities and surrounded by a crowd of thousands chanting slogans of support. Old women clad in hijabs and young girls in Western-style clothing waved flags, singing and dancing to songs of Kurdish freedom.

The demonstration came a few days after a car bomb exploded outside an Assad base in the city, killing four soldiers. The bombing was later claimed by Jabhat Al-Nusra, a shadowy jihadist organization with ties to al-Qaida that is fighting against the regime. The night before had seen a gunbattle at the airport between the FSA and the regime. These incidents heightened fears that the war was encroaching into Kurdish territory.

/

A look back at the violence that has overtaken the country

Some Kurds believe the FSA means to lure the Kurds further into the conflict, forcing Assad to open up another front and possibly using the Kurdish issue to persuade Turkey to further involve itself. Others think that the regime will grow weary of the Kurdish push for more rights and eventual autonomy, and look to reassert control.

Turkey has leveled accusations that the PYD is simply a front for the Kurdistan Worker's Party (PKK), which has been engaged in a guerrilla war against the Turkish government for 30 years. Turkey has threatened to invade the Kurdish areas to root them out. PYD categorically denies that it is simply a front for the PKK, saying that they share ideology but do not take orders.

NYT: Syria rivals in deadly game of cat-and-mouse

Saleh Muslim Mohammed, the leader of the PYD,?also expressed fear of the Islamist brigades and extremists said to be fighting alongside the FSA.

For now, the Kurds appear intent on staving off escalating conflict while attempting to build up enough strength to protect their newfound rights and eventually obtain a level of freedom that has eluded them in Syria.

"Violence is the last choice, but if anything happens here the YPG will answer," said Mohammed Saeed, a PYD official in Derik. "Every family here has weapons. All the Kurdish, not only the YPG, will defend themselves. Without Kurdish rights, there will be no stability."

?Banned? iPad Mini Promo Makes Sure We Know It's Not an iPod ...

Making fun of those white-background Apple product launch videos is one of the internet?s favorite parody styles, and the iPad mini with its disappointing (to some) sets of specs and high price tag is ripe for such ridicule.

No retina display? Outdated processor? Who cares? It?s still revolutionary?right?

?All of these efforts combine to create a product with an exceptional level of finish, and the result is an extraordinary iPad ? one that will be used until a faster processor is developed, as well as the technology to put a retina display inside such a tiny device, and a higher megapixel camera.

But who knows when that?ll be? That?s at least 7 months into the future. The iPad mini is the future. It?s the future until May ? at least. Probably more like the end of May. Or more than likely June. iPad Mini is now the future until then,? says Jony Five, ?Senior VP of Design.?

(AP) ? A victory by protesters against the expansion of a chemical plant proves the new rule in China: The authoritarian government is scared of middle-class rebellion and will give in if the demonstrators' aims are limited and not openly political.

It's far from a revolution. China's nascent middle class, the product of the past decade's economic boom, is looking for better government, not a different one. They're especially concerned about issues like health, education and property values and often resist the growth-at-all-costs model Beijing has pushed.

The past week's chemical-plant protests reached an unruly crescendo over the weekend, when thousands of people marched through prosperous Ningbo city, clashing with police at times. The city government gave in Sunday and agreed to halt the plant's expansion.

Even so, the protesters did not back down, staying outside city government offices hours after the concession. About 200 protesters, many of them retirees, returned Monday to make sure the government keeps its word on the oil and ethylene refinery run by a subsidiary of Sinopec, the state-owned petrochemical giant.

"In yesterday's protest, the ordinary people let their voices be heard," a 40-year-old businessman who would give only his surname, Bao, said on the protest line Monday. Government officials, he said, "should say they are completely canceling the project. They should state clearly that they will stop doing these projects in Ningbo and the rest of China."

The protest in Ningbo ? a centuries-old trading center of tree-lined streets and canals south of Shanghai now surrounded by industrial development zones ? was well-timed. It came a few weeks before a transfer of power in the ruling Communist Party, and Beijing wants calm nationwide so as not to detract from the leadership transition.

Given that pressure and the fact that many Ningbo officials also have middle-class concerns about air pollution and other quality-of-life issues, the local government found it easier to back off, Peking University sociologist Liu Neng said.

"The government would need lots of courage to insist on keeping this project. The cost would be too high if the protest escalated to another level," Liu said. "Since the 18th party congress is around the corner, it is very important to maintain stability."

The protests underscore the challenge the incoming leaders face in governing an increasingly wealthy ? and wired ? population who are growing more assertive about issues they care about. Democratic movements in places like South Korea and Taiwan started with the middle class, and in Taiwan's case environmental issues featured prominently.

It's not the first time the government blinked in the face of middle-class protesters.

In the past five years, officials in the northeastern port of Dalian and the southeastern port of Xiamen have relented on plans to operate or build petrochemical plants after large protests. In Xiamen's case, worries about declining property values figured as much as health issues.

In 2009, when Beijing ordered computer owners nationwide to install software that supposedly blocked pornography but that people feared was a back door to snooping, a national outcry forced it to back down.

Dalian, Xiamen and Ningbo are among the better-off cities in China. The treatment protesters there received has been gentler than the beatings and large-scale arrests often given to rowdy rural and working-class protesters. Those tend to be larger and more violent, and are seen as more of a direct challenge to the party, which supposedly represents the proletariat.

The recent protests across China against Japan's move to nationalize some islands in the East China Sea were rare cases in which the government tacitly allowed broader demonstrations.

Even among middle-class protesters, officials are not caving in to all demands. In Ningbo's case, the government did not heed protesters' demands for the mayor, Liu Qi, to step down, or for police to release at least seven protesters who refused to heed police orders to leave the area around the government offices.

In the compromises of recent years, the outlines of an unspoken protest compact have emerged: Keep the demonstrations peaceful and focus largely on local issues, and the backlash will be minimal.

The crowds in the Ningbo protests carried smartphones and had mobile Internet connections. Though they often displayed a large dose of skepticism about the party's official rhetoric, they also urged fellow protesters to stay calm and not fight back against police. The government calibrated its response carefully.

After police tried to thwart the Ningbo protesters on Friday night and scuffles ensued, the government backed off. But the clashes angered the public and seemed to galvanize more participants. Police let the protesters gather and shout for hours, positioning hundreds of riot and military police in the city government compound but at first only sporadically deploying them. They let protesters march through the city's busy downtown without incident.

By appealing for peaceful protests, the Ningbo demonstrations attracted thousands of participants, said the writer and prominent social commentator Murong Xuecun, the pen name of author Hao Qun.

"That's a safer way to protest," he said. "If China wants to move toward democracy using a gentle approach it will depend on the middle class."

Why voters don't care about Mitt Romney's move to the center

The Republican nominee has outraged liberals by re-embracing his "Moderate Mitt" persona. But most of the country is shrugging it off

I was on CNN's Reliable Sources?the other day (watch the video below), when host Howard Kurtz asked me why Mitt Romney has largely "gotten a pass" as he tacks to the political center.?

Of course, in the days leading up to Nov. 6, it's a hot topic. Kurtz's Daily Beast colleague, blogger Andrew Sullivan, told ABC's This Week?that Romney's Oct. 3 debate performance was "like an alien that ripped off his mask and said, 'I'm brand new now.'"

SEE MORE: The Nate Silver truthers: Is the Times' polling guru biased?

Sullivan added that Romney has "no core at all and has changed it a dozen times to appeal to whatever market share he's appealing to."

It is surely true that the Mitt Romney who voters met during that first debate was dramatically different from the Mitt Romney who Barack Obama helped define in the negative ads he released this summer.

SEE MORE: What happens if Hurricane Sandy delays the jobs report?

In fact, the Mitt Romney who showed up at the debates was different from the Mitt Romney who won the Republican primaries this winter and spring.

Voters don't much care about Romney's past flips so long as his current flop is in their direction.

SEE MORE: Fact-checking the final Obama-Romney debate: Who told the biggest whoppers?

And yet, almost nobody is shocked or surprised by this. Here's why:

First, at this late point in the campaign, the media isn't terribly interested in litigating past policy details, lest it look like they're taking sides. Additionally, the "Romney-is-a-flip-flopper" narrative is decidedly old news. Just as the media collectively yawns when new information about Obama's relationship with the Rev. Jeremiah Wright surfaces, Romney's flexibility is baked into the cake.

SEE MORE: Why the world wants Obama to win

Plus, Romney's so-called moderation is more stylistic than substantive. The bases of both parties now conflate toughness with ideological purity, so winning the GOP primary required Romney to hurl "red meat" rhetoric as much as it required strict policy adherence to orthodox positions.

This is not to say that Romney hasn't Etch-a-Sketched some of his positions. He has. But the Romney we have seen lately has also been temperamentally moderate ? even as he has embraced many conservative positions.?

SEE MORE: The October Surprise is here, and her name is Sandy

Just as Ronald Reagan's charm and demeanor reassured Americans ? and undermined the notion that he was a right-wing radical ? Romney's image since the first debate has been of a friendly and serious leader.?

Of course, there is nothing mutually exclusive about being reasonable and conservative. As Mike Huckabee put it four years ago, "I'm a conservative, but I'm not mad at anyone about it."

SEE MORE: Top 5 final-debate memes: 'Horses and Bayonets,' and more

The only people upset with Romney's performance at the foreign policy debate seemed to be the hardcore conservatives and hardcore liberals. Both extremes wanted him to appear more bellicose ? for entirely different reasons. But Romney was aiming for security moms and undecided voters in places like Ohio.?

Predictably, the new Romney is driving liberals absolutely mad. Having initially decided it was easier to tag him as an ultra-conservative than as a flip-flopper, they went into the first debate hoping to?cast him as a war-mongering plutocrat.

SEE MORE: Presidential ad spending: By the numbers

During that final debate, President Obama tried desperately to prove that Romney was instead a political chameleon. That didn't work, either. The look on Obama's face was one of frustration and disdain. I have seen that look before. It was the same look Romney's Republican adversaries had every time they failed to make Romney pay for his evolving positions during the GOP primary.??

(Obama has since invented the term "Romnesia," and referred to Romney in a Rolling Stone interview as a "bullshitter.")

SEE MORE: Why Obama and Romney aren't talking about climate change

In many ways, we all learned the wrong lessons from John Kerry's defeat in 2004. He was cast as an effete windsurfer that voted for it before he voted against it. And so, we all assumed that flip-flopping was the unforgivable sin, and that catching someone doing it was a silver bullet.

But as frustrating as it may be, the one consistent thing Romney's opponents have learned is that voters don't much care about your past flip so long as your current flop is in their direction. In the primary, grassroots conservatives were generally okay with him flipping to their points of view. Now, voters looking for a serious moderate are relieved to see Romney flop their way.

SEE MORE: Obama vs. Romney: Who really has the momentum?

And the truth is that voters often go with their intuition ? and at the "gut" level, Romney is a moderate. It's entirely plausible that the reason Romney is now surging ? the reason he is now more likeable ? is that this Mitt Romney is actually more authentic than the "severely conservative" Mitt Romney.?

Either way, politicians should quit expecting voters to care about consistency (even if we agree they?should care). Voters aren't like a jury sworn to weigh the evidence and then hold people accountable for past actions or inconsistencies. Instead, they are more like a committee tasked to hire someone for the future.?

SEE MORE: Obama's final debate victory: Will it give him a boost?

Expecting someone to be shocked that a politician would move to the right (or left) to win a primary, and then tack to the center, is like Casablanca's Captain Renault being shocked ? SHOCKED! ? to find gambling at Rick's Caf?.

The people who try to point out inconsistencies, more often than not, look like tattletales, while the voters are more sophisticated and Emersonian in their acceptance of the notion that "a foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds."

How Sandy turned into a superstorm

The combination of a winter-time jet stream, warm tropical air and a full moon is turning Sandy into a huge and complicated storm that has the potential to devastate the Northeast and parts of the Mid-Atlantic. TODAY's Matt Lauer reports.

By Alan Boyle

Hurricane Sandy is posing a monster challenge for weather forecasters and emergency agencies, due to an amazing combination of meteorological factors, but what's just as amazing is how well they've been able to predict what seemed to be an unpredictable disaster.

"It looks like we've been fairly consistent on this, even five days out," Chris Landsea, science and operations officer at the National Hurricane Center in Miami, told me today. "I think when all is said and done, on the track forecast, we're going to be quite accurate."

Sandy's path, which took a left turn from the Atlantic to slam head-on into the heavily populated Northeast, is just one of the unusual aspects of this storm. "The size of this system, the late-season nature, and the track?? all these are fairly unique characteristics," Landsea said. To look for precedents, you have to go back to infamous hurricanes such as Agnes in 1972, Hazel in 1954, even the great storms of 1944, 1938, 1815 and?1804. But today, the region is so much more populous and developed that the impact is certain to be far greater.

Here are five factors that have turned Sandy into a superstorm:

Northerly track: Atlantic tropical storms most commonly tear through the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico, and lose energy as they pass over the U.S mainland. This storm, however, crept along the Eastern Seaboard, where waters that were warmer than usual for this time of year kept the storm alive. As the storm moved northward, it morphed into a hybrid storm, drawing additional strength from the differential between the storm's warm air and cold northern air from the jet stream.

"There's a transformation that this system is undergoing," Landsea explained. "This is actually evolving into a winter storm, and later, a nor'easter." One result of this evolution is that the storm system has widened to more than 800 miles in diameter, stretching from the Carolinas to Maine and Canada.

NASA / NOAA

NOAA's GOES-13 weather satellite shows the storm system associated with Hurricane Sandy covering the northeastern United States even before landfall on Monday.

The left turn:?Hurricanes that get so far north could drift off into the cold Atlantic to die?? but they can also be pushed into the mainland, as Hurricane Irene was last year. Irene followed a path that was roughly parallel to the coastline, but Sandy took a hard left turn that put it on a course for a direct, perpendicular strike on the coast. That's because a cold front on the mainland is drawing the storm westward, while the current state of a weather pattern known as the North Atlantic Oscillation is blocking the storm from heading eastward.?

Storm surge: Sandy's top sustained winds of 85 miles per hour typically wouldn't rate as a superstorm, but its effects will be magnified, Landsea said. "Even though it's not a 'major' hurricane by any means ... there is substantial threat because of the storm surge and because of the rainfall. There's going to be flooding. Both of those factors are going to be killers," he said. The storm surge is projected to range from 6 to 11 feet. One of the big reasons for such a high surge is that the waters off the coast of New York and New Jersey are so shallow: As the surge from the deeper ocean nears the coastline, all that water piles up to create a higher wave.

Full moon:?Another reason for the huge storm surge is the fact that the moon is hitting its full phase just as Sandy is making landfall. The celestial lineup of the sun, moon and Earth contributes to higher-than-normal high tides.?

Winter storm: Sandy is such a late-season storm that it's running into winter weather in the northeastern United States, which is adding an extra dimension to the misery. "I have not been around long enough to see a hurricane forecast with a snow advisory in it," Craig Fugate, administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, told NBC's TODAY. The storm could trigger up to 3 feet of snow in the Appalachians, the National Weather Service reported. The Weather Channel's Tom Niziol said that "an amazing combination of factors" have come together to make Sandy a threat due to the snow as well as the rain.

Landsea and other forecasters may marvel at the factors behind what some have called a "perfect storm" or "Frankenstorm," and there'll surely be lots of lessons learned for future weather modeling. But that's not what's uppermost on their mind right now. "What's really important are the impacts," Landsea said.

To keep on top of the storm, and to keep safe, keep an eye on NBC News' hurricane coverage:

Correction for 12:25 a.m. ET Oct. 30: The original version of this posting missed the correct spelling of Landsea's name by one letter. I regret the error.

Comparing Luxury Center Console Boats | recreation and sports ...

For those looking in to new fishing boats, comparison shoppers will know what to go with. Costs, fees, used or new, and any other important factors must be considered prior to a sale taking place. Doing this ensures the proper decisions are made, and the most money is saved on the purchase price of the boat. This is a very big purchase and we need to treat it seriously.

Cost is surely one of the biggest determining factors for people looking to buy new boats. The overall cost, including financing and how much they can put down, will dictate what will be purchased. Therefore, shopping around and comparing several models form different name brands is something you simply must do. After a house, this will be the largest purchase most of us will make in our lives.

Size will also play a role in the decision of which boat you will buy. The sizes will vary depending on what you want to accomplish out on the water and how many people you want to take with you. What type of water will also be important. Is it a lake, river, or the ocean? After considering this, and knowing what requirements are necessary, of the boat, you will be closer to selecting one that makes sense for you.

If you want a great name brand, you will usually pay a little more. That may be worth it depending on the brand you are looking at. Some hold their value quite well long after you have purchased them. By comparing, and seeking out several choices, buyers will ultimately put themselves in a good position to buy the right one. From the greatest performance, to most reputable performance out on the water, each one has their positives. Maintenance and fees which come along with owning a boat should also be thought through. Choosing something that is maintenance free, and fairly cheap to maintain, is surely something for consideration.

Considering each of these things before looking closely at new luxury boats will ensure the best boat is chosen. It also allows the buyer to avoid a potentially bad deal, or over paying for something which is not worth the high cost, when it comes to making the purchase choice which is made. So, adding this to your list, helps in making the final choice prior to purchase.

Insurer subsidiary lifts Loews Corp. 3Q profit

NEW YORK (AP) ? Loews Corp. said on Monday that its third-quarter net income rose 9 percent as improving performance at the diversified holding company's CNA Financial insurance subsidiary offset lower earnings at deepwater driller Diamond Offshore Drilling.

Loews reported net income of $177 million, or 45 cents per share, for the three months ended Sept. 30. That was up from earnings of $162 million, or 40 cents per share, in the same period a year ago.

Excluding a $166 million charge writing down the value of a subsidiary's natural gas properties because of declining natural gas prices, Loews earned $339 million, up from adjusted earnings of $177 million a year ago.

Revenue rose 8 percent to $3.72 billion from $3.44 billion.

Loews, which is controlled by New York's Tisch family, reported net income of $195 million at CNA Financial, more than double the $84 million that CNA reported in the year-ago period. That subsidiary, 90 percent owned by Loews, reported higher net investment income and lower catastrophe losses.

But at the Diamond Offshore Drilling unit, about half of which is owned by Loews, earnings fell 31 percent to $83 million from $121 million.

Loews also owns a 55 percent interest in Boardwalk Pipeline Partners, and HighMount Exploration & Production and Loews Hotels are wholly-owned subsidiaries.

Egypt church moves closer to picking new pope

CAIRO (Reuters) - A vote to help choose a pope for Egypt's Coptic Orthodox church began on Monday in a process the minority Christians hope will deliver a leader to guide them safely through the upheaval of the Arab Spring.

The previous incumbent, Pope Shenouda III, had led the church for four decades until his death in March at the age of 88. His successor will assume the post in a fast-changing Egypt where long oppressed Islamists are now in power - a major shift that is a source of alarm for the minority Christian community.

About 2,400 people have the right to vote in Monday's ballot and must pick from a shortlist announced by the church on October 13 and which comprises two bishops and three monks aged between 49 and 70.

Picked by the church, the voters include leading members of the church, public figures and a handful of representatives of the Ethiopian Church, which has historic links to the church in Egypt.

The three most popular candidates go forward to the November 4 draw which, according to an ancient tradition, will be carried out by a child who must be blindfolded. The new pope will be the 118th to lead the Coptic Church.

"We are all so worried from the situation in Egypt now and the rise of Islamists to power but the church has always been harassed," said Magdy Helmi, a 53-year old voting as a representative of a provincial branch of the Coptic Church. "The church became an expert in surviving bad times," he added.

The Muslim Brotherhood, the mainstream Islamist movement that propelled President Mohamed Mursi to power, has sworn to guard the rights of Christians in the overwhelmingly majority Sunni Muslim country of 83 million people.

Monday's voting took place at a cathedral complex in Cairo's Abbasiya district. Bearded priests in black robes queued up to post their ballot papers into transparent boxes. The result was expected late on Monday.

"I hope that whoever wins will have the patience and wisdom of Pope Shenouda as times are tough on both Christians and Muslims - on all Egyptians," said Sameh Nazeh, a 39-year old Copt who was waiting for his wife - one of the voters - to cast her ballot.

Wen Jiabao?s Family Wealth.

DALIAN, China ? Just a few weeks before his dramatic fall from power,?Bo Xilai?wrote an inscription in calligraphy, praising the Chongqing Water Assets Management Company, and urging support for its operations.
What he did not say was that a foundation controlled by his younger brother,?Bo Xicheng, had acquired a stake in a subsidiary of the water company.
Mr. Bo had done something similar in 2003, while serving as governor here in Liaoning Province.
He said his province would make supporting the Dalian Daxian company, a conglomerate engaged primarily in electronics manufacturing, one of the most important tasks of the next five years.
A few years earlier, another company controlled by the same younger brother was listed as the owner of nearly a million shares in Dalian Daxian, worth about $1.2 million.
It is not clear whether Mr. Bo knew of the indirect stakes in the companies, or whether his brother profited from his pronouncements.
But now, in the aftermath of Mr. Bo?s dismissal, on suspicions of corruption and accusations that his wife arranged the killing of a British business associate, there are mounting questions about whether Mr. Bo, who was most recently the party chief in the city of Chongqing and a member of the Politburo, used his enormous political clout to enrich himself and his closest relatives.
For much of the last decade, while Bo Xilai was busy moving up the ranks of the Communist Party, and even striking populist themes aimed at improving the lot of the poor, his relatives were quietly amassing a fortune estimated at more than $160 million.
His elder brother accumulated millions of dollars? worth of shares in one of the country?s biggest state-owned conglomerates.
His sister-in-law owns a significant stake in a printing company she started that was recently valued at $400 million.
And even Mr. Bo?s 24-year-old son, now studying at Harvard, got into business in 2010, registering a technology company with $320,000 in start-up capital.
Bo Xilai?s downfall this spring has also cast a sharper spotlight on the hidden wealth and power accumulated by the Communist Party?s revolutionary families, and by the sons, daughters, wives and close relatives of the nation?s high-ranking leaders.
?This could really open a can of worms,? says?Bo Zhiyue, a senior fellow at the National University of Singapore?s East Asian Institute.
?The relatives of other party leaders are also doing lots of business deals, and people will begin to ask: What about them? Was the Bo family the only one doing this kind of thing??
Mr. Bo was suspended from his Politburo position and his leadership of Chongqing, a large metropolis with province status, in recent weeks amid accusations that, among other things, he interfered with an investigation into the death of a?Neil Heywood, a British businessman whose body was found in a Chongqing hotel room on Nov. 15.
His death was initially attributed to alcohol poisoning.
Mr. Bo?s wife,?Gu Kailai, and?Zhang Xiaojun, the family?s 32-year-old ?orderly,? were named as the main suspects, with officials saying Ms. Gu and her son,?Bo Guagua, had had a dispute with Mr. Heywood over ?economic interests.?
The case has also raised questions about how the Bo family was able to afford to send their only son to study in England at Harrow and Oxford University, as well as now at Harvard, for graduate school.
State-run media reports have hinted at the possibility that the Bo family had been transferring illicit assets overseas.
And soon after Mr. Bo was dismissed from his posts,?Xu Ming, one of China?s wealthiest businessmen, with close ties to Mr. Bo and his family, was detained, possibly here in the city of Dalian, where Mr. Bo had once served as mayor.
None of the extended family members have been accused of illegality.
But the circumstances surrounding Mr. Bo?s actions in support of companies where family members had an interest suggest that he may have used his influence to help increase their wealth.
Corporate records in Hong Kong and China show that the siblings of both Mr. Bo, who also served as commerce minister in the national government, and his wife have been exceptionally active for years in forming investment companies and setting up offshore entities.
Moreover, sometimes Mr. Bo?s family members have held their stakes using an alias.
Two of Ms. Gu?s sisters ??Gu Wangjiang?and?Gu Wangning?? have earned millions of dollars in publishing, real estate and other ventures.
Together they own about $120 million worth of shares in the TungKong Security Printing Company in eastern China.
The TungKong Web site says the company has contracts with some of China?s biggest state-owned enterprises and government agencies, including the tax authorities and the Central Bank.
Gu Wangning also helped Bo Guagua establish a technology company in Beijing in 2010.
The Guagua Technology Company?s supervisor is listed as Mr. Zhang, the Bo family aide accused along with Ms. Gu of being involved in Mr. Heywood?s death.
Two of Bo Xilai?s three brothers are well-established businessmen with close ties to state companies.
His elder brother,?Bo Xiyong, 64, has invested over the years, according to Hong Kong records, in a series of offshore investment vehicles like Advanced Technology and Economic Development, partly owned by a British Virgin Islands entity, and Far Eastern Industries.
But little about the companies is publicly available.
Bo Xiyong is also vice chairman of China Everbright International, a division of the Everbright Group, a giant state-owned company.
His annual salary is about $200,000 and his stake in the company during the past decade is about $10 million, based on shares he has sold and the value of his current stock options, according to public filings.
In addition, Bo Xiyong is a deputy of the Chinese People?s Political Consultative Conference, a government advisory body, and until recently he served as deputy chairman of HKC Holdings, a Hong Kong company controlled by the family of an Indonesian billionaire.
In 2010, the big American private equity firm TPG invested about $25 million in HKC, which specializes in infrastructure and alternative energy projects in China and has won numerous state contracts.
Bo Xicheng, the younger brother with the foundation, has ties to several companies that operated in Dalian and Chongqing, the two cities where Bo Xilai served as a high-ranking official.
His charitable foundation, the Beijing Xingda Educational Foundation, has on its board of directors the heads of two real estate developers, the Dalian Huanan Group and Chongqing Tianyou, as well as?Weng Zhenjie, the chief executive of the Chongqing International Trust Company.
Earlier this year, a Chongqing business tycoon,?Zhang Mingyu, accused Bo Xilai?s police force of threatening him and protecting Mr. Weng, who Mr. Zhang said was a former business partner who had quarreled with him in Chongqing.
Among the advisers to the foundation, which has already raised more than $20 million, are two academics from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences who publicly supported Bo Xilai?s ?Chongqing model? of development.
The foundation owns a $2 million stake in Chongqing Water Group, a company now valued at about $5 billion.
Bo Xicheng has served as a director of several big state-owned companies, including Citic Securities, one of China?s largest investment houses.
He is also the founder of a small company that makes fire extinguishers and other equipment, called Beijing Liuhean Firefighting Science and Technology, whose products are used in government agencies, luxury hotels, power plants and in Tiananmen Square in Beijing.
Less is known about Bo Xilai?s wife, Gu Kailai, except that she opened her own law firm, with offices in various countries, and also set up several consulting firms with foreign businessmen.
There is also a great deal of mystery about Mr. Bo?s son by his first marriage,?Li Wangzhi.
Like the children of so many high-ranking Chinese leaders, Mr. Li, 34, has worked in private equity and held a job at Citigroup.
He invested in companies in Dalian, on his father?s turf, according to corporate filings.
He has been known alternatively as?Brendan Li?and?Li Xiaobai.

Parents shaken after NYC nanny accused of killing kids

?

The New York nanny who police say fatally stabbed two children in her care was reportedly enduring financial problems and seeking professional help. NBC's Mara Schiavocampo reports.

By David B. Caruso and Meghan Barr, NBCNewYork.com

The nightmarish case of a?nanny accused of stabbing to death two children in her care?stunned the family's well-to-do neighborhood and caused legions of parents to wonder how well they know who is watching their kids.

The nanny lay in critical condition Friday with what police said were self-inflicted knife wounds, and investigators were unable to question her, in part because she was still breathing with the help of a tube.

Her motive and mental state remained a mystery, authorities said, and no charges were filed.

On Thursday evening, the children's mother, Marina Krim, took her 3-year-old daughter home from a swim lesson to find her other youngsters, ages 2 and 6, dying of knife wounds in the bathtub of their Upper West Side apartment near Central Park. The nanny then turned the blade on herself, police said.

Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said the investigation has yet to reveal anything amiss in the household before the slayings.

There are tens of thousands of nannies working in New York City, but reports of serious violence by caregivers against children are exceedingly rare. Parents are accused of killing their own children with far more frequency.

'A horrible tragedy'
More common are stories about nannies like Brunilda Tirado, who threw her body over a stroller to protect a baby from falling debris during a building collapse in the same Manhattan neighborhood in 2005. She suffered a broken arm and other injuries.

The slayings will undoubtedly prompt many parents hiring a nanny to check references more thoroughly and swallow hard over the possibility that they might unknowingly hire a person who would do their child harm.

"For working parents this is a nightmare. Every mother I know is asking today, 'How do I go back to work?'" said Denise Albert, who has two young children and lives a few blocks from the site of the tragedy.

She stopped by the building to pay her respects, recalling a painful time she had to fire a nanny after 3 1/2 years when she found out the woman was lying about where she was taking the kids.

"It's the most difficult relationship in the world," she said.

Albert said the two college students now caring for her children after school feel like members of the family.

Some parents said their trust in their nannies is unshaken.

"It's a horrible tragedy, but it doesn't make me question my nanny at all," said Elizabeth McCarthy, a single mother of a 6-year-old boy. "For me, I found somebody I trust. She's an incredible part of my son's life. She's a wonderful person, she's raised children of her own and this doesn't make me in the least bit question anything about her."

Across the street from the building where the Krims live, several nannies with children in strollers stood as if stricken, watching police officers milling around the entrance.

Michelle Person, a nanny from Jamaica, broke down thinking about the children who were killed.

"You just feel like it was the kid that you were taking care of, too. It's horrible," she said, her eyes filling with tears.

She said she loves the 11-month-old boy she cares for as if he were her own son.

Another nanny, Karen Henry, said she felt uncomfortable walking around the neighborhood after the deaths.

"Parents are looking at you as though you're responsible for what happened," she said.

Thin line
Multitudes of parents think of their nannies as Mary Poppins-like heroes and trust them completely, but the relationship can be a complicated one. There is maybe no other profession in which the line between family and workplace, employer and employee, is so thin.

Two years ago, New Yorkpassed a law to protect nannies from financial exploitation. The nannies commonly work 10- to 12-hour days, for an hourly wage similar to that of a full-time employee at Walmart, usually without benefits.

Sharon Weatley, a writer and actress who is a former nanny and now relies on baby sitters to take care of her daughters, ages 4 and 14, said that if the Upper West Side nanny did indeed kill the children, "she is obviously crazy and this is a chemical imbalance going on in a horrifically tragic situation."

Thursday's slayings evoked the case of Louise Woodward, a British teenager who was convicted of killing a baby in her care in Newton, Mass., in 1997. That case prompted discussion at the time about whether teenage au pairs could handle the stress of caring for a stranger's child. Woodward served less than a year in jail.

This nanny's case is different. She is older and had experience. Police said she went to the Krims on a referral from another family.

Cheryl Meyer, a psychology professor at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio, and co-author of the book "Mothers Who Kill Their Children," said that while many women who kill their kids feel trapped, in most cases a nanny who thinks she is at breaking point with a difficult child can walk out.

She said it's not uncommon to hear of a family in which the nanny or baby sitter quits, leaving a note or just never coming back.

"Moms can't do that. There's no way out for them," Meyer said. "For a nanny, there is an out."
