Attack kills 2 Americans, at least 2 Afghans

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? An Afghan soldier turned his gun on American troops at a checkpoint in the country's east, killing two Americans and at least two fellow members of Afghanistan's army in a shooting that marked both the continuance of a disturbing trend of insider attacks and the 2,000th U.S. troop death in the long-running war, officials said Sunday.

The string of insider attacks is one of the greatest threats to NATO's mission in the country, endangering a partnership key to training up Afghan security forces and withdrawing international troops.

Saturday's shooting took place at an Afghan army checkpoint just outside a joint U.S.-Afghan base in Wardak province, said Shahidullah Shahid, a provincial government spokesman.

"Initial reports indicate that a misunderstanding happened between Afghan army soldiers and American soldiers," Shahid said. He said investigators had been sent to the site to try to figure out what happened.

An Afghan official speaking on condition of anonymity said three Afghan soldiers were killed in the clash. It was not clear if the assailant was among the dead.

The attack happened about 5 p.m. in Sayd Abad district, Afghan Defense Ministry spokesman Gen. Zahir Azimi said in an emailed statement. He did not provide further details, saying he would wait for a report from investigators.

NATO forces announced the assault early Sunday morning, saying only that it was "suspected insider attack" and that a NATO service member and civilian contractor were killed.

One U.S. official confirmed that the service member killed was American, while another confirmed that the civilian was also American. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because the nationality of the dead had not yet been formally announced.

Afghan soldiers and policemen ? or militants in their uniforms ? have gunned down more than 50 foreign troops so far this year, eroding the trust between coalition forces and their Afghan partners. An equal number of Afghan policemen and soldiers also died in these attacks, giving them reason as well to be suspicious of possible infiltrators within their ranks.

The attacks are taking a toll on the partnership between international and Afghan forces, prompting the U.S. military to restrict operations with small-sized Afghan units earlier this month.

The close contact ? with coalition forces working side by side with Afghan troops as advisers, mentors and trainers ? is a key part of the U.S. strategy for preparing the Afghans to take the lead in security operations as the U.S. and other nations prepare to pull out their last combat troops at the end of 2014, just 27 months away.

The number of American military dead reflects an Associated Press count of those members of the armed services killed inside Afghanistan since the U.S.-led invasion on Oct. 7, 2001.

Sun unleashes a wide, but benign, coronal mass ejection

ScienceDaily (Sep. 28, 2012) ? The sun erupted with a wide, Earth-directed coronal mass ejection (CME) on Sept. 27, 2012 at 10:25 p.m. EDT. CMEs are a phenomenon that can send billions of tons of solar particles into space that can reach Earth one to three days later, affecting electronic systems in satellites and on the ground. Experimental NASA research models estimate that the CME is traveling at around 700 miles per second and will reach Earth on Sept. 29.

CMEs of these speeds are usually benign. In the past, similar CMEs have caused auroras near the poles but have not caused disruption to electrical systems or significantly interfered with GPS or satellite-based communications systems.

The CME is associated with a fairly small solar flare that was measured as C-class, which is third in strength after X- and M-class flares. The flare peaked at 7 p.m. EDT and came from an active region on the sun labeled AR 1577.

Little Big Town ?Tornado? Album Review

Little Big Town ?Tornado? Album Review

?Pavement Ends? is a countrified song and if you haven?t lived in the country you may not get it. Living in Southern California again?I get it. Gotta get out of town and have some fun in mother nature with your friends. This song has a ton of country twang to it and it gets the album off to a great start. I dare you not to bob your head or stomp your feet to this song. Seriously try. You can?t. Fun song. Great song.

?Pontoon? is a song that makes me want to get a house boat for the weekend with some friends or may e a pontoon. This song has pep and is a very happy feel good song. The bass line jams an the drums are poppy. The lyrics are light and catchy. You can?t help but sing along. It?s a great summer time hit and should bring back some great memories for you like it does for me. I?ve heard it 5 times so far today on the radio. It?s great. Love it.

?Sober? is a love song about loving being in love and drunk on love. This is a cool song. It?s not slow nor is it fast. It has a nice pace to it and the message rings out loud and clear. ?When I die I don?t want to die sober? No one wants to die lonely. I agree. I don?t anyway. ?I love being in love. It?s the best kind of drug.? Yes it is. Such pretty harmonies. This is such a pretty song. I love it. Great song.

?Front Porch Thing? is going to get rid of your country blues with some good ole southern rock country blues. This song fucking rocks! ?Having so much Fun in outa be a sin!? I want to go jam with these guys on their porch. Sounds like a great time as the guitar licks ring out the song ends. I want more! That must be a great live song. Love it. Great song. Radio time. Next please.

?Your Side of the Bed? is sad song. Nothing worse than being with the one you love and knowing that you are a million miles apart. Lying still in the deafening silence of a dying love. Beautiful song. I feel really depressed and completely alone. LONELY It did it?s job. Great song.

?Leavin? in Your Eyes? is a sight no one wants to see. This is country and it has to be sung. This song has great music behind it. It is very poppy. It is a good song but not grabbing a hold of me like the rest of the album has done. Great harmonies and it is musically great, but I?m not feeling it. Good song.

?Tornado? is a song about a woman tearing a man?s heart to pieces and destroy him because she can. Something about women scorned. Pretty sure I?ve covered that in another review. The destructive force that is woman. Stop pissing them off guys?..And can you ladies not take out your rage on the few good guys out there. They are not the ones that broke your heart. ?I?m a tornado. Looking for a man to break.? Ruthless! I?m not saying some guys don?t deserve it. They do. This should be on the radio in the next few months. Boot on you heart stomping boots girls and let?s ride. Good song.

?On Fire Tonight? is an upbeat fun song that gets the blood pumping. Getting back to having a good time and letting go of all the troubles the world piles on your shoulders. The guitar is rocking and the band is jamming. The lyrics are catchy and ?Be on Fire tonight? yes we are. Let?s burn this baby down. Barn burner for sure. Great song.

?Can?t Go Back? is a look back at the things we wish we could change. Gorgeous harmonies. ?I don?t want to see this house not be a home. I don?t want to witness the end of you and me.? Very mellow song. We can not fix our mistakes and let the important moments in our lives slip away. Live in the now and love while you can. Tell them you love them every chance you get. You never know when it?s your last breath. Good Song.

?Self Made? is about self confidence and making the world around you the world you want it to be. Relying on others will never help you reach your dreams. Dream Big. Do Big. Be Big. The success of the self made person is far more rewarding than anything handed to you. Fun upbeat song with a positive message. Of course I love it. Great song.

?Night Owl? is a good song to grab your girl and slow dance to. Wishing that a night owl is waiting up for you? Me too. This is a pretty song and a nice finish to the album. You can feel the love in this song. ?I hope you?re not asleep when I get there.?

You are gonna go through this album like a Tornado. It moves fast and is built for speed. Every song is made radio ready by Little Big Town. Short and to the point. I can easily hear any of these songs on the radio today. Man can they sing. Wow! Seriously?.as a song writer I am in awe of them. They make it seem effortless. The album is a mix of slow sad songs with life lessons and fast live your life with lots of love songs. Everything you expect from a country album. Although, I would like some fiddle in here but that?s just me; but someone should buy the band a beer cause they are rocking. There are some really great songs in here and Little Big Town has a big sound with an even bigger heart. I?m sure there is a little town out there proud of their homegrown stars. This is a good album for your Country Music collection and I for one need to catch Little Big Town in concert soon.

Refuge Of Sinner gains favourite tag for Billy Mulvaney Junior ...

Refuge Of Sinner gains favourite tag for Billy Mulvaney Junior Memorial Open 525

For his two epic OR victories, Refuge Of Sinner has earned the favourite tag for tonight?s high-stakes race of Billy Mulvaney Junior Memorial Open 525 that will go down at Shelbourne Park racecourse. Considering the F. O'Donnell trained black dog?s impressive track record, most of the punters have showed confidence on him, hoping that he will multiply their money.

How far this decision is justified, a journey to the novice hound?s profile can tell it better. The two-year-old dog debuted in June with a grand victory of A1 format. He went on to win his second A1 race as well, but slightly missed hat-trick as Shaneboy Spencer forced him to rely on the runner-up rank in the third start.

On August 3, the talented son of Oran Classic out of Shelbourne Kay ran his first open race at Harold?s Cross and finished second again. That was The Formula One 525, won by Solo Star. But the dashing dog stunned all by winning the Ladbrokes.com Bet in Running Open 525 with the mammoth margin of 8 lengths----that was his first trip to Shelbourne Park.

The tremendous triumph eared great applause to Refuge Of Sinner along with raising his odds in the betting market.

The skilled sprinter fought well and sealed the runner-up position in The 2012 Track Bookmakers Puppy Derby Round 1 Heat 6 on September 7. He marvellously brought home the ace title of The 2012 Track Bookmakers Puppy Derby Round 2 Heat 8 on the 14th of this month.

In the light of these stats, we can hope that the young and energetic runner will be able to contain his five competitors over 525 yards quite convincingly. The entire situation goes to his favour. Now, it is up to him how better he exploits it.

Slipalong Gold is too likely to do well in the race. The O'Connor trained black dog grabbed a 6-length clean victory in his first OR contest on June 9.

Having won two consecutive A1 races during the third week of September, he is on the verge of a hat-trick.

The clash will be close enough, but success is destined to go to Refuge Of Sinner. Good luck to him.

There is an important legal difference from the present along with a bank loan. A very generous family member or perhaps friend may offer you $5000 regarding car repairs, for example. If there is no expectation associated with payment, the amount of money can be viewed a gift. The actual provider couldn't take legal action against for repayment later within a civil suit. When the borrowed funds provider designates the amount of money like a bank loan and also the consumer will pay back a dollar, the amount of money can be viewed a legitimate bank loan as well as the loan company may demand payment anytime. Small statements legal courts spend a lot of time identifying regardless of whether a transaction which include money would have been a gift as well as loan. For that reason paperwork is essential when designing personal financial loans to buddies or even loved ones.

The requirements to get that loan are quite obvious. In case you are employed, having a month to month income regarding $800 or higher, and also have a bank-account, you satisfy the basic requirements. Some loan providers within our network might have extra needs.

Cash financial products are unguaranteed financial loans eliminated upon your next wage. Since they're short-term lending products, they could be small; different from $100 to $1500 as well as repayment arrives in your next payday. They may be very useful for overcoming a brief monetary crisis, yet really should not be regarded as the long-term financial solution.

Most loan programs are addressed by finance institutions or other professional loan providers. They may use a variety of conditions to determine if your potential consumer is actually qualified for a financial loan. Previous credit score is practically usually regarded, together with current revenue and also assets. The objective of the money may also be a good issue-a established expense possibility may have a lot more appeal when compared with an misguided concept for any new cafe. One essential consideration may be the earnings in order to debt ratio in the client. Can the customer manage to pay the bank loan back along with interest? Skilled loan companies generally 'sell' money, so consumers should be aware just how much financing actually 'costs' when it comes to a real income.

Chalco ends Winsway bid, walks away from second Mongolia coal deal

DEAR ABBY: My husband and I just got some shocking news. His father -- age 81 -- is leaving his wife of 60 years! Mom is not entirely self-sufficient and seems dependent on him.Dad found himself a younger woman -- a "chick" of 70. He has announced that he still has sexual needs and wants to enjoy the rest of his life. My husband thinks it will be a short-term fling and he'll return to Mom, but she says she won't be taking him back. (Who knows how she'll feel later?)My problem is, no matter what happens between them, I'm having a hard time even considering forgiving him for his selfishness. ...

Vatican: 'Jesus' Wife' papyrus is a fake

An ancient papyrus fragment which a Harvard scholar says contains the first recorded mention that Jesus may have had a wife is a fake, the Vatican said Friday.

"Substantial reasons would lead one to conclude that the papyrus is indeed a clumsy forgery," the Vatican's newspaper, L'Osservatore Romano, said in an editorial by its editor, Gian Maria Vian. "In any case, it's a fake."

    4. China volcano shows signs of unrest

Joining a highly charged academic debate over the authenticity of the text, written in ancient Egyptian Coptic, the newspaper published a lengthy analysis by expert Alberto Camplani of Rome's La Sapienza university, outlining doubts about the manuscript and urging extreme caution.

The fragment, which reads "Jesus said to them, 'My wife...'" was unveiled by Harvard Professor Karen King as a text from the 4th century at a congress of Coptic Studies in Rome last week.

Her study divided the academic community, with some hailing it as a landmark discovery while others rapidly expressed their doubts

"It's really pretty unlikely that it's authentic," University of Durham Professor Francis Watson told Reuters after he published a paper arguing the words on the fragment were a rearrangement of phrases from a well known Coptic text.

Watson, who has previously worked on identifying forged gospels, said it was likely to be an ancient blank fragment that was written over in the 20th or 21st century by a forger seeking to make money.

Watson argues that the words on the fragment do not fit grammatically into a larger text.

"It's possible to get hold of an old bit of unwritten-on papyrus and write some new stuff on it," Watson said. "There is a market for fake antiquities throughout the Middle East ... I would guess that in this case the motivation might have been a financial one."

Academic debate
Manuscript experts who heard King's presentation quickly took to their blogs to express doubts, noting that the letters were clumsy, perhaps the script of someone unused to writing Coptic.

Writing from the conference, early Christian scholar Christian Askeland said specialists there were divided between two-thirds who were extremely skeptical, and one-third convinced the fragment was false.

"I have not met anyone who supports its authenticity," Askeland wrote from a session of the Tenth International Congress of Coptic Studies, where King gave her paper.

In an email to Reuters after the conference ended and before the Vatican editorial, King said: "Whether, in the end, the fragment will be shown to be authentic is still to be finally determined, but the serious conversation among scholars has begun."

During the conference King stressed that the fragment did not give "any evidence that Jesus was married, or not married" but that early Christians were talking about the possibility.

AnneMarie Luijendijk, associate professor of religion at Princeton University, said she concluded that the fragment was indeed an authentic, ancient text, written by a scribe in antiquity.

"We can see that by the way the ink is preserved on the papyrus and also the way the papyrus has faded and also the way the papyrus has become very fragmentary, which is actually in line with a lot of other papyri we have also from the New Testament," Luijendijk told Reuters during the conference.

The idea that Jesus was married resurfaces regularly in popular culture, notably with the 2003 publication of Dan Brown's best-seller "The Da Vinci Code," which angered the Vatican because, among other things, it was based on the idea that Jesus was married to Mary Magdalene and had children.

Christian tradition has long held that Jesus was not married and the Catholic Church, by far the largest in Christendom, says women cannot become priests because Christ chose only men as his apostles.

Will Gold 401k Really Safeguard One's Assets? | Class Act Homes

The majority of employees have established their retirement by opening a retirement program. The most popular program is the 401k plan. Still, it?s advisable for retirement savings to be set with trustworthy investments which are more reliable and constant precious metal like gold. If you possess an active 401k account, you may turn this to a 401k gold program.

In order to convert your retirement account to a gold 401k account, you need the assistance of a gold company to rollover the plan. It is a quick procedure and you don?t have to pay additional fees. The good thing when acquiring this program is that you won?t be able to simply make investments with gold, but in other rare metals too.

Gold is among the most desirable rare metals concerning its value. In addition, it?s one of the rare metals which never go down in price. The worth of gold keeps on increasing that?s the reason why it?s a wise type of investment. On the other hand, you may not receive gold bullion in physical form on your gold 401k program. The investment is instantly stored in a recognized and secured vault of precious metals.

You are kept informed of your investment every six periods including the current rates. Just like the retirement program, you can encash anytime your gold asset but you may be billed for a certain expense by cashing out sooner than your retirement.

The advantage of acquiring gold assets is it generates significant amount as compared to typical 401k plan. This is because gold continues to soar high on its value. As opposed to a typical 401k plan, investments on bonds, stocks, and ETFs are rather risky and earn just a little compared to this precious metal. At times, stocks and options are lower and if it happens, your investments would be impacted.

There is another thing which you should realize prior to rolling over the typical 401k account to the 401k gold plan. You need the assistance of the gold dealer to get this done. You need to know more details on the ins and outs of gold investing. You should know the pros and cons to help you understand how your investment works.

Retirement isn?t just about solidifying the future. It is not just about investing the personal savings for something which may help you when you reach the age of retirement. It should be an asset which also generates income. Being employed for many years and investing your dollars on the wrong investment will likely be devastating. It?s essential to find more suitable alternatives for your retirement plan. It is not easy that your hard-earned dollars can just vanish within a matter of seconds if you are on the wrong retirement program.

The presence of gold 401k investment helps it to be much more profitable on your retirement plan. You do not have to stress of dropping the value as this precious metal carries on to be more expensive each year. If this flow persists, there is no valid reason why you will not gain more as you reach the age of retirement.

Before you decide to transfer the 401k into gold, you should be confident about it. There are professionals who wish to help in this respect. For details, kindly visit: 401k Gold

Electronics that vanish in the environment or the body

ScienceDaily (Sep. 27, 2012) ? Physicians and environmentalists alike could soon be using a new class of electronic devices: small, robust and high performance, yet also biocompatible and capable of dissolving completely in water -- or in bodily fluids.

Researchers at the University of Illinois, in collaboration with Tufts University and Northwestern University, have demonstrated a new type of biodegradable electronics technology that could introduce new design paradigms for medical implants, environmental monitors and consumer devices.

"We refer to this type of technology as transient electronics," said John A. Rogers, the Lee J. Flory-Founder Professor of Engineering at the U. of I., who led the multidisciplinary research team. "From the earliest days of the electronics industry, a key design goal has been to build devices that last forever -- with completely stable performance. But if you think about the opposite possibility -- devices that are engineered to physically disappear in a controlled and programmed manner -- then other, completely different kinds of application opportunities open up."

Three application areas appear particularly promising. First are medical implants that perform important diagnostic or therapeutic functions for a useful amount of time and then simply dissolve and resorb in the body. Second are environmental monitors, such as wireless sensors that are dispersed after a chemical spill, that degrade over time to eliminate any ecological impact. Third are consumer electronic systems or sub-components that are compostable, to reduce electronic waste streams generated by devices that are frequently upgraded, such as cellphones or other portable devices.

Transient electronic systems harness and extend various techniques that the Rogers' group has developed over the years for making tiny, yet high performance electronic systems out of ultrathin sheets of silicon. In transient applications, the sheets are so thin that they completely dissolve in a few days when immersed in biofluids. Together with soluble conductors and dielectrics, based on magnesium and magnesium oxide, these materials provide a complete palette for a wide range of electronic components, sensors, wireless transmission systems and more.

The team has built transient transistors, diodes, wireless power coils, temperature and strain sensors, photodetectors, solar cells, radio oscillators and antennas, and even simple digital cameras. All of the materials are biocompatible and, because they are extraordinarily thin, they can dissolve in even minute volumes of water.

The researchers encapsulate the devices in silk. The structure of the silk determines its rate of dissolution -- from minutes, to days, weeks or, potentially, years.

"The different applications that we are considering require different operating time frames," Rogers said. "A medical implant that is designed to deal with potential infections from surgical site incisions is only needed for a couple of weeks. But for a consumer electronic device, you'd want it to stick around at least for a year or two. The ability to use materials science to engineer those time frames becomes a critical aspect in design."

Since the group uses silicon, the industry standard material for integrated circuits, they can make highly sophisticated devices in ways that exploit well-established designs by introducing just a few additional tricks in layout, manufacturing and supporting materials. As reported in the Sept. 28 issue of the journal Science, the researchers have already demonstrated several system-level devices, including a fully transient 64-pixel digital camera and an implantable applique designed to monitor and prevent bacterial infection at surgical incisions, successfully demonstrated in rats.

Next, the researchers are further refining these and other devices for specific applications, conducting more animal tests, and working with a semiconductor foundry to explore high-volume manufacturing possibilities.

"It's a new concept, so there are lots of opportunities, many of which we probably have not even identified yet" Rogers said. "We're very excited. These findings open up entirely new areas of application, and associated directions for research in electronics."

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency supported this work. The Tufts University team was led by Fiorenzo Omenetto; the Northwestern University team was led by Youggang Huang. Rogers is affiliated with the departments of materials science and engineering, of chemistry, of mechanical science and engineering, of bioengineering and of electrical and computer engineering, and with the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology and the Frederick Seitz Materials Research Laboratory at the U. of I.

At U.N., Rwanda defiantly rejects claims of Congo rebel support

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - Rwanda defiantly denied claims at the United Nations on Thursday that it was aiding rebels in Democratic Republic of Congo and rejected U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon's summary of a meeting on the crisis, diplomats said.

According to Ban, most states attending a high-level meeting on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly with Rwandan President Paul Kagame and Congolese President Joseph Kigali "condemned all forms of external support" to the rebels.

Kagame said after the meeting that Rwanda rejected allegations it was supporting the M23 rebels and said that "solving the crisis will be impossible if the international community continues to define the issue erroneously."

M23 rebels, who have ties to a warlord wanted by the International Criminal Court for war crimes, Bosco Ntaganda, have been fighting government soldiers in eastern Congo's North Kivu province since April. Some 320,000 civilians have been displaced.

"Most participants strongly condemned all forms of external support to the M23 and other negative forces in the DRC, and demanded the immediate and permanent cessation of such support," according to the meeting summary. "Some participants cautioned that those supporting the M23 could also be held accountable."

"They stressed ... the urgency of constructive engagement and dialogue between the DRC and Rwanda," it said.

Despite Rwanda's denials, a senior U.N. diplomat has said that privately Kigali was "a bit embarrassed, to say the least, and this could be one of the reasons behind the lull (in fighting) in the Kivu." He said if Rwanda withdrew support then the M23 group, numbering about 1,500, "could be subdued."

The DRC said last month it had asked the U.N. Security Council to place sanctions on Rwanda's defense minister and two top military officials for backing the rebellion.

A U.N. experts' report has accused Rwandan Defense Minister James Kaberebe, chief of defense staff Charles Kayonga, and General Jacques Nziza, a military adviser to President Paul Kagame, of being "in constant contact with M23."

"There can be no possible justification for such support, whether in terms of military hardware, or strategic advice. It must stop," Britain's Minister for Africa, Mark Simmonds, told the U.N. summit. "And there can be no impunity for those who violate human rights. They must be brought to justice."

INTERNATIONAL FORCE?

France said it would support sanctions against M23 and warned neighboring states against supporting the group.

"The M23 is benefiting from external support, including from neighboring DRC states," said French Minister for the Francophone countries Yamina Benguigui. "Nothing can justify the support of an armed rebellion led by war criminals. All support of M23, whatever it is, must stop."

As uneasy neighbors, Congo and Rwanda have gone to war against each other in the past. Rwanda has backed armed movements in the DRC during the past two decades, citing a need to tackle Rwandan rebels operating out of Congo's eastern hills.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton met jointly with Kagame and Kabila on Monday in New York and pressed them to resolve the conflict.

In July the United States withdrew some $200,000 in military aid for Rwanda, Washington's first direct punitive action against the Rwandans over the crisis. Several other western European nations also have cut or suspended aid.

The United Nations said it was working with east and central African states on their proposal for a neutral force to tackle the M23 and other armed groups in eastern Congo.

"It is something that generates interest, but we are short of a real concept of operations - who would be in, who would do what, who would pay - and this is why more work needs to be done," said U.N. peacekeeping chief Herve Ladsous after the meeting.

"We are already working (with them) to flesh out the concept because at the end of the day it will be submitted to the Security Council and the Security Council will want very precise explanations as to what it is all about," he said.

A resolution mandating military intervention in the DRC would have to be approved by the 15-member Security Council.

"Before endorsing any such support, we and the U.N. Security Council will want to understand the intended role and scope of the force," said Britain's Simmonds. Britain, the United States, France, China and Russia are veto-wielding council members.

A U.N. mission in the DRC, known as MONUSCO, has more than 17,000 troops, but the force is stretched thin across a nation the size of Western Europe and struggles to fulfill its current mandate of protecting civilians.

U.N. helicopter gunships frequently back up outgunned government forces, but even that firepower failed to prevent rebels from taking several towns in July. The U.N. force would work with any neutral force, but could not launch operations.

Drew HEALTH Promotes Family Health and Fitness | Monticello Live

September is Family Health and Fitness month. What form of exercise doesn?t take any instruction, can be done almost anywhere or anytime, costs nothing and has the lowest rate of injury for any exercise? Give up?

Walking is the answer to all these questions and more. By walking at a steady pace, by increasing your distance each time you walk, and by walking more often, your health could greatly improve.

But there are still more questions! When should we walk? What time of day should we exercise? When should we stop? Below are some tips to help get the most out of walking:

? Choose a comfortable time of day to exercise, not too soon after eating and when the air temperature is not too high.

? Be careful not to overexert. Stop if you find yourself panting or feeling nauseous, if your breathing doesn?t return to normal within ten minutes after exercising, or your sleep is affected.

? Don?t over do it! Spend adequate time warming up, and building up. Don?t increase the number of miles you walk to quickly.

? Wear shoes that are comfortable and provide good support. Shoes should provide arch support and shouldn?t cause blisters or calluses.

? Wear lighter clothing than normal because brisk walking generates a lot of body heat. In colder weather, wear several layers of light clothing. They will trap body heat and are easy to shed if you get too warm.

? Some people like to exercise with others. If that?s the case, pick a buddy and get in better shape together!

? Always remember that it?s a good idea to discuss it with your doctor before starting any type of new exercise routine.

The Drew HEALTH Coalition meets monthly to develop and implement plans to create healthier communities. If you are interested in addressing family health, or other health issues, we invited you to attend our monthly meetings. For more information contact Karen Brown at 870-367-6234.

New research suggests that turning up the temperature could save energy with little or no increased risk of equipment failure

As data centres continue to come under scrutiny for the amount of energy they use, researchers at University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC) have a suggestion: turn the air conditioning down.

"We see our results as strong evidence that most organizations could run their data centers hotter than they currently are without making significant sacrifices in system reliability," says Bianca Schroeder, a UTSC assistant professor of computer science.

As data centres have proliferated they have required more energy, accounting now for about 1 percent of global electricity usage. A sizeable fraction of that is the cooling necessary to keep the machinery functioning properly.

But in a paper called Temperature Management in Data Centers: Why Some (Might) Like It Hot, Schroeder and her UTSC colleagues found that warmer temperatures than are normally recommended might be able to save energy without negatively impacting equipment reliability and longevity.

Data centres typically operate at temperatures from 20C to 22C. Estimates show that just 1 degree increase in temperature could save 2 to 5 percent of the energy the centres consume. Schroeder says that most data centres could probably increase temperatures much more than that.

To conduct the study, the researchers collected data from data centres run by Google, Los Alamos National Labs, and others. They also directly tested the effect of temperature on equipment performance in their lab. Their data showed that higher temperatures either weren't associated with negative effects on the equipment, or else the negative effects were smaller than predicted.

The Face of Indefinite Detention ? E-Flyer Site

BEFORE he died on Sept. 8, Adnan Farhan Abdul Latif had spent close to 4,000 days and nights in the American prison at Guant?namo Bay, Cuba. He was found unconscious, alone in his cell, thousands of miles from home and family in Yemen.

editor, Andrew Rosenthal, follow @andyrNYT.

Eleven years ago, he found himself in Afghanistan at the wrong place and the wrong time. It was an unusual set of events that took him there. Years earlier Mr. Latif had been badly injured in a car accident in Yemen. His skull was fractured; his hearing never quite recovered. He traveled to Jordan, seeking medical treatment at a hospital in Amman; then, following the promise of free medical care from a man he met there, journeyed to Pakistan, and eventually to Afghanistan.

Like so many men still imprisoned at Guant?namo, Mr. Latif was fleeing American bombing ? not fighting ? when he was apprehended by the Pakistani police near the Afghan border and turned over to the United States military. It was at a time when the United States was paying substantial bounties for prisoners. Mr. Latif, a stranger in a strange land, fit the bill. He was never charged with a crime.

The United States government claims the legal authority to hold men like Mr. Latif until the ?war on terror? ends, which is to say, forever. Setting aside this troubling legal proposition, his death and the despair he endured in the years preceding it remind us of the toll Guant?namo takes on human beings.

Adnan Latif is the human face of indefinite detention.

In the landmark 2008 case Boumediene v. Bush, the Supreme Court ruled that Guant?namo detainees were entitled to ?meaningful judicial review? of the legality of their detentions, via the writ of habeas corpus ? a constitutional check obligating the government to demonstrate a sufficient factual and legal basis for imprisoning someone. The Boumediene decision, in principle, ought to have given hope to Mr. Latif and men like him.

And it was under such principle that two years later, a United States District Court judge hearing Mr. Latif?s habeas corpus petition ordered him released, ruling that the accusations against him were ?unconvincing? and that his detention was ?not lawful.? By that time, Mr. Latif had been cleared for release from Guant?namo on three separate occasions, including in 2009 by the Obama administration?s multiagency Guant?namo Review Task Force.

Nevertheless, the Department of Justice appealed the district court?s decision to the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit ? which has ruled in the government?s favor in nearly every habeas corpus appeal it has heard. The appellate court reversed the trial judge?s release order, effectively ruling that evidence against detainees must be presumed accurate and authentic if the government claims it is.

A strong dissenting opinion criticized the appellate court majority for not just ?moving the goal posts,? but also calling ?the game in the government?s favor.?

But Mr. Latif didn?t see it as a game. He was dying inside. Like other men, he had been on a hunger strike to protest his detention. After losing the appeal of his case, he told his lawyer, ?I am a prisoner of death.?

Three months ago, the Supreme Court declined to hear the appeals of Mr. Latif and six other detainees, who pleaded for the court to restore its promise of meaningful review of their cases.

But what is unsaid in all of the court rulings is that Mr. Latif was imprisoned not by evidence of wrongdoing, but by accident of birth. In Guant?namo?s contorted system of justice, the decision to detain him indefinitely turned on his citizenship, not on his conduct.

With Mr. Latif?s death, there are now 56 Yemenis who have been cleared for release by the Guant?namo Review Task Force since 2009 but who remain in prison. President Obama, citing general security concerns, has imposed a moratorium on any and all transfers to Yemen, regardless of age, innocence or infirmity.

It is fair, and regrettable, to assume that some of these detainees will die there as well.

Mr. Latif, after all, was the ninth man to die at Guant?namo. More men have died in the prison camp than have been convicted by a civilian court (one) or by the military commissions system in Guant?namo (six). In 2006, Salah al-Salami, a Yemeni, and Yasser al-Zahrani and Mani al-Utaybi, both Saudis, were the first men to die at Guant?namo. Their deaths were called suicides, even though soldiers stationed at the base at the time have raised serious questions about the plausibility of the Defense Department?s account. (Full disclosure: the Center for Constitutional Rights represents the families of two of the men who died.)

According to the government, three more detainees committed suicide and two others died of natural causes. There has been no independent investigation into any of the deaths, however; there has been no accountability for a range of constitutional and human rights violations at Guant?namo.

The government has not yet identified the cause of Mr. Latif?s death, but it is Guant?namo that killed him. Whether because of despair, suicide or natural causes, death has become an inevitable consequence of our politically driven failure to close the prison ? a natural byproduct of the torment and uncertainty indefinite detention inflicts on human beings.

The case of Adnan Latif should compel us to confront honestly the human toll of the Guant?namo prison ? now approaching its 12th year in operation. We can start this reckoning by releasing the 86 other men at Guant?namo who the United States government has concluded no longer deserve to be jailed there.

Baher Azmy is the legal director of the Center for Constitutional Rights.

Get Your Windows Ready for Winter

Are you ready for winter?

It?s fall. The days are getting shorter, the nights are getting cooler, and soon it will be cold. Are you ready for the wind and rain and snow of the fall and winter season? To stay warm this winter, you?ll need an efficient home, or much of your gas or electric bill will head out the window. If you want to avoid heating up the outdoors, you can look to your windows for help.

open windowWindows are lovely things. They let the winter light in, brightening our days in this cold and dark season. However, they?re also poor insulators. While your walls keep your house at a good temperature, the function of windows is to let light in, not to insulate. If you want a well-insulated home, you?ll need to work with those windows to help them become better insulators.

Thick, Efficient Windows Are the Best Solution

The most expensive and best solution to poor window efficiency is to make sure that your windows are double-glazed. Many older homes have thin windows that let a lot of heat out. Some have storm windows that are single-glazed but slide over each other. This is also less than ideal. Unfortunately, installing new windows can be expensive. If you?re not able to do this, then you?ll need to look for other solutions while you save to fix up your windows.

Checking For Drafts

First, check around your windows to see whether they?re letting a lot of air in and out. How do the edges look? How is the base of the window? Is your sliding storm window collecting moisture on the inside? Close your windows and place a thin piece of paper near the edges. You can also place a draft snake across the leak. Draft snakes are tubes that are stuffed with fabric. You can place these across the bottoms of windows are doors, but they aren?t as efficient as caulking the actual leak.If it moves, you have air moving in and out of your house. You can usually seal window leaks by caulking around the window.

If you notice a lot of moisture around the window and rotten wood, or the air motion seems to be very large, it might be time to call in a professional to make sure that your windows and frames are structurally sound.

Placing Barriers Across the Windows

To prevent heat from moving out of the windows, you can place a barrier across the windows. If you have blackout blinds from the summer, these thick blinds work well as a window barrier during the winter. Keep them closed as much as possible. Cellular shades also act as a window barrier, providing some entry for the light while keeping windows from losing a lot of heat. You can also place a thick layer of window film plastic across your windows. This plastic acts as a temporary barrier to seal up the window for the winter and can be removed when the weather warms up.

The Blower Door Test

Perhaps your windows aren?t your biggest source of energy leakage. If you?d like to determine how to make your entire house more energy efficient, you can find the sources of leaks using a blower door test. This test is done by a professional and reveals where air moves in and out of your house.

When your windows are efficient, this saves you money during the long, cold winter. It also keeps your home warm. Even a small investment in your windows can pay off in smaller energy bills this winter.

Cagliari forced to forfeit Roma match 3-0

Associated Press Sports

updated 11:14 a.m. ET Sept. 24, 2012

MILAN (AP) -Roma has been awarded a 3-0 victory in its game at Cagliari, which was postponed on Sunday for safety reasons after the Sardinian club defied orders to play the Serie A match in an empty stadium.

The Italian league announced its decision to punish Cagliari on Monday, saying that the club's actions were "a blatant violation" of its rules and "the direct and only reason" the game was called off.

Cagliari could face further sanctions as the matter as has also been referred to the Italian Football Federation.

Cagliari President Massimo Cellino had urged fans to ignore the authorities, posting a statement on the club website calling for fans to attend peacefully, regardless of the ruling.

Andy Reid Is Mesmerized By Analysis: Your NFL Late Games Viewing Guide

Andy Reid Is Mesmerized By Analysis: Your NFL Late Games Viewing Guide There are three groups of people currently watching football games. The people who just watched their team win and will enjoy the rest of their football watching day. The people who just watched their team lose who will begrudgingly watch football for the rest of the day, carefully planning bathroom breaks around highlights shows. And finally, the people who had to wait three hours for their game to start?which is now! Feel free to swing by the open thread it yak to your heart's content.

Philadelphia at Arizona (FOX): Veteran commenter and football yakker Stev_D has got this game down, in your face analysis style.

Atlanta at San Diego (FOX): This is a beautiful article right here. It is one entire article devoted to the traveling habits of the Mike Smith-coached Atlanta Falcons and how successful it has proven. 5-0 on the west coast! I know what you're thinking, in the five years Smith has been coach there's been some pretty terrible teams out there right? Nevertheless, Mike Smith took a page from the Brian Billick coaching tree (of which current defensive coordinator Mike Nolan is also a member) and has the team travel on Fridays. It's a big help. We know this because someone spent 550 some words telling us. And then Mike Nolan puts the cherry on top the whole thing with the last sentence.

Added Nolan: "The biggest thing is having the better team."

Houston at Denver (CBS): Houston's all like "Man, I sure am glad we don't have to play Peyton Manning anymore." And then Houston's Buddy is all like "Dude, you're playing him this year." Houston: "Shut up, man. He's gone." Houston's Buddy "Check the schedule, holmes." Houston: "What the fuck?? Fucking Goodell, man. Fucking Goodell." Houston's Buddy: "At least he kinda stinks now..." Houston: "[kicks dirt] Yeah, I guess."

Pittsburgh at Oakland (CBS) Remember the Ian Eagle-Dan Fouts comparison from earlier? Well here you go. The shadows of Darren McFadden and Carson Palmer look to get Oakland's first win of the season against the Steelers. Polamalu and Harrison are out again. Rashard Mendenhall is out again. This has a decidedly 13-3 Steelers win feel to it.

Smith's emotional ride ends with win over Patriots

BALTIMORE (AP) ? Torrey Smith showed up at the stadium tired and drained, unsure if he would suit up for the Baltimore Ravens.

No one would have blamed him if he didn't. After all, his younger brother had died in a motorcycle accident less than 24 hours earlier.

Smith opted to play, and the second-year wide receiver caught touchdown passes of 25 and 5 yards to help the Ravens beat the New England Patriots 31-30 Sunday night in a rematch of the AFC title game.

Tevin Jones, 19, died late Saturday night in Virginia. Smith left the team hotel at 1 a.m. Sunday and spent much of the day with his family before heading back to Baltimore.

"I texted my mom when I got to the stadium. That was when I knew I was going to play," Smith said. "She was excited about it. She said, 'He'd want you to play.'"

With his teammates offering him encouragement and prayers, Smith not only played, but contributed heavily. He had six catches for 127 yards to help Baltimore (2-1) win its 12th straight at home.

"I gave him a psalm," teammate Ed Reed said. "God's in control, and God has a bigger plan than ours."

Ray Rice, who ran for 101 yards, praised Smith for his determination and courage.

"He's a stronger man than I am," Rice said. "If I had to face death within hours of playing the game, that would be a tough decision. He's got two families, and he knows we have his back."

Upon arriving at the stadium, the familiar surroundings helped Smith get ready to go.

"When I came here, the more I was grounded. The more comfortable I began to feel," he said. "I'm glad I came back up here. It helped me out a lot."

Coach John Harbaugh said: "If you're around athletics, I guess you feel like it's an escape, an opportunity to do what he does. He's being doing it his whole life; he knows what to do. When Torrey said he wanted to play, the decision was finished. He was going to get the opportunity to play. He deserved that."

A moment of silence was observed before the game for Smith's brother.

"That touched me right there," Smith said. "That the organization would honor my brother, one of my family members who had absolutely nothing to do with this program besides me."

When the teams met in January, the Patriots squeezed out a three-point win at home to advance to the Super Bowl. The stakes weren't nearly as high in this one, yet the game was eerily similar.

In the previous meeting, Billy Cundiff missed a 32-yard field goal in the closing seconds. In the encore, rookie Justin Tucker ? who took the job away from Cundiff in training camp ? drove his 27-yard kick just inside the right upright.

The game-winner followed a pass interference call against Devin McCourty, who was covering Jacoby Jones.

"It's a football game and we can't control that," McCourty said. "If a flag is thrown, that's something we can't worry about."

As the officials were leaving the field, Patriots coach Bill Belichick grabbed one of them by the arm. He didn't pursue as the official continued to run off the field.

"I'm not going to comment on that," Belichick said. "You saw the game. What did we have, 30 penalties called in that game?"

Actually, 24 ? including 14 against the Ravens for 135 yards.

Joe Flacco went 28 for 39 for 382 yards and three touchdowns for the Ravens, who amassed 503 yards in offense.

Tom Brady completed 28 of 41 passes for 335 yards and a score as the Patriots (1-2) fell below .500 for the first time since Week 1 of 2003.

"We didn't move the ball consistently enough to score points, score touchdowns," Brady said.

But Patriots defensive tackle Vince Wilfork said, "We didn't do what we needed to do to help our offense tonight."

New England led 13-0 after the first quarter and 30-21 with 14 minutes left, but couldn't make either lead stand up.

Wes Welker had eight catches for 142 yards and Brandon Lloyd caught nine passes for 108 yards for the Patriots, who fell to 6-1 against the Ravens in the regular season ? 7-2 including the playoffs.

Down 20-14, the Ravens opened the second half with an 80-yard drive that ended with a 7-yard touchdown run by Rice. Brady matched that with an 80-yard march of his own, repeatedly picking on cornerback Cary Williams, before Danny Woodhead scored on a 3-yard run to put New England ahead.

After Stephen Gostkowski kicked his third field goal to make it 30-21, Smith caught a 5-yard touchdown pass with 4:01 left to get the Ravens to 30-28. Flacco went 6 for 7 for 76 yards in the 92-yard drive.

Baltimore executed the game-winning drive in the final 2 minutes.

Brady answered with a touchdown pass of his own, a 7-yarder to Julian Edelman with 2 seconds left to cap an 81-yard, beat-the-clock march.

NOTES: Brady moved into 12th place on the career yardage list, past Hall of Fame quarterback Joe Montana (40,551). ... Flacco's ninth 300-yard passing game passed Vinny Testaverde for most in Ravens history. ... Edelman left with a hand injury. ... Baltimore punted only three times.
