Help Wanted: Black Spies with a College Degree

Personally I don?t see why James Bond movies should have anything to do with the Cold War-era demographics of Western intelligence agencies. Remember the time James Bond went to the Moon? But because people are talking about Idris Elba as Bond on my dash, this article has numbers for retired CIA employees from HBCUs as of 1996 (meaning these agents were almost certainly active during the Cold War). The top schools, with the number of CIA employees:

  • Howard University (20)
  • Virginia State University (9)
  • West Virginia State College (5)

Obviously it?s not reasonable to pretend that employment and promotion wasn?t (and isn?t) hugely discriminatory. But to people arguing that intelligence agencies didn?t hire people of African descent during the Cold War (and to people who feel that historical verisimilitude is an important consideration for Bond, as opposed to suaveness and convincing propensity for badassery) - that?s simply not the case. There were definitely African-American CIA employees by the end of the Cold War.

So there you go.
